The IEEE has conferred to CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, the honor of an IEEE Milestone in the history of electricity for the invention in 1968 of the multi-wire proportional particle detector. This has been the turning point towards fully electrical analysis methods in the elementary particle physics experiments worldwide, which have led to crucial progress in the understanding of basic constituents of nature.

The installation and unveiling of this IEEE milestone during a ceremony on September 26th emphasizes the close relation between technology, science, industry and well-being in the society.
